The National Liberal Club European Forum was established in 2016 by Trevor Peel, it’s founder and current Chair, to have a relationship with the 50+ countries of the continent of Europe, including the EU 27. The European Forum brings together a diverse group of NLC members, to build an enduring and equitable relationship with our fellow European leadership colleagues, through diplomatic, political, cultural, and business initiatives. We leverage our proud liberal ties with the Liberals International (LI), the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE), and the collective experience and expertise of our members in European affairs.

Our key events include the yearly ALDE congress, delegates representing the NLC European Forum to the congress in Warsaw in 2016, Amsterdam in 2017, Madrid in 2018, and Athens in 2019, and diplomatic and cultural visits to EU institutions in Brussels (2018), Ireland (2019), the Isle of Man (2022), and Portugal (2023). The Plans are also in place for visits to Morocco and the UK Crown Dependencies: Jersey & Guernsey. We aim to progress our liberal values and work with Europe for an open, progressive, and fair relationship post Brexit.

During 2020-2021 lockdown, the European Forum (in conjunction with the Commonwealth Forum) joined the world in virtually connecting with members of the NLC via their “Zoom Talks”. A wide range of fantastic speakers and topics from Christine Jardine MP, Liberal Democrat Trade and Treasury Spokesperson, Professor Chris Grey and Irina von Wiese, former Liberal Democrat MEP discussing What’s next for Brexit? to the Rt. Hon Alistair Carmichael MP and Robert Woodthorpe Browne MBE, along with several distinguished speakers examining Europe’s Role in Preventing the Further Unravelling of Lebanon’s Economy and Society, French Senator Olivier Cadic with his discussion How is Brexit affecting European Entrepreneurship in the UK? and Ambassador João Vale de Almeida, EU Ambassador to the United Kingdom joined us to celebrate Europe Day on Monday 10 May 2021 speaking on The Future of UK-EU Relations.

If you missed any of our talks the first time around or just want to rewatch, you can check them our on our Media Page, or the National Liberal Club’s YouTube Page where you can view all of the NLC Forums’ online events.
