Lord Chidgey: A personal tribute by James Brown
November 2016 in Malta and November 2022 in the National Liberal Club were the first and last times I saw David Chidgey.
On both occasions he was chairing discussions with a professional calmness and gravitas which ensured discussion and a respect of all viewpoints. His informed and thoughtful comments enhanced debate and his hosting skills in dinners and receptions put speakers and guests quickly at ease.
We were fortunate to have Lord Chidgey as President of the Commonwealth and European Forum from its outset in 2016 and he led delegations abroad to Malta, Gibraltar, and Ireland. He was accompanied by April and they were a delighful winning combination bringing a real enthusiasm and status to our visits.
Despite his busy schedule he always found time for forum committee meetings and his wealth of experience through his engineering travels, the House of Commons, and then the House of Lords meant his contributions were always valuable and informed. David was an excellent raconteur and I was fortunate enough to spend time with him socially during trips and after meetings. He was quite simply my friend and I shall miss him as his family and other friends will do also.
