On Saturday the 15th of January, a tsunami flooded Nuku’alofa, Tonga's capital, after a massive eruption from a nearby undersea volcano, which could be heard from all over the South Pacific, even as far away as New Zealand.
Flooding from the tsunami has caused at least 3 known deaths, including a British National. In addition to the flood, aid has been made difficult by the ash, continuing to fall from the eruption. The NLC Commonwealth Forum would like express their sympathies to the people of Tonga and reaffirm our commitment to Commonwealth Nations, in particular the Small Island States like Tonga, most impacted by the Climate Crisis.

If you would like to help, please consider donating to UNICEF or the Red Cross, who have mobilised relief and aid efforts in Tonga.

Please contact Emily Robinson should you have any questions or need further information.
