Continuing our series of zoom events, the National Liberal Club European Forum is delighted to announce that Ambassador João Vale de Almeida, EU Ambassador to the United Kingdom will be joining with us, to celebrate Europe Day on Monday 10 May 2021, from 18.00 to 19.00, speaking on “The future of UK-EU relations”. [Europe Day is Sunday 9 May 2021]

At a time when the Trade and Co-operation Agreement (TCA), the Withdrawal Agreement and in particular the Northern Ireland Protocol are being implemented in practice, many are beginning to ask whether the downsides of Brexit are teething problems, the result of hasty negotiation, EU assertiveness and/or the shortcomings of the Brexit project itself?

Ambassador Vale de Almeida will offer an EU perspective and update on these and other issues, most notably co-operation between the UK and EU on the COVID-19 vaccine rollout and prospects for the EU’s Conference on the Future of Europe, which will be launched on Europe Day.

Ambassador Vale de Almeida has a distinguished career as a senior European Union diplomat, becoming EU Ambassador to the UK in February 2020. He previously served as EU Ambassador to the United Nations (2015 to 2019) in New York, he coordinated the EU's presence in all UN bodies, working closely with the Permanent Representatives of the EU Member States.

The evening’s moderator and Chair, is Nick Hopkinson, Vice Chair, NLC European Forum, former Director, Wilton Park, Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

The evening will be interactive with interventions and a Q & A session, with concluding remarks from, Irina von Wiese, lawyer, lecturer in law, former Liberal Democrat MEP.

We look forward to you joining us onWednesday 10 May 2021, at 6 pm.
